- Are drama series popular in Viet Nam?
Actually, I do not think that they gain popularity in Vietnam. Vietnamese producers tend to produce low-budget movies, which do not cost them an arm and a leg. Also, people in the country prefer watching short films rather than long series because it might help them to save a great deal of precious time to do other vital things.
- Do you think TV dramas reflect what happens in the real world?
Of course, almost all TV dramas are associated with contemporary social issues such as friends and family conflicts or violence. For example, the newly-released series “13 reasons why” awakes young people about the serious consequences of online bullying and encourages people to protect the innocent from getting bullied.
- What kind of movie do you like watching? / What kinds of movies do you like best?
To be honest, I’m addicted to watching American comedy series like Friends, Charmed or Desperate Housewives. It’s because they help me to relax and recharge my batteries after stressful time at work or at university. In addition, they have taught me important lessons about friendship, family bond and true love.
– Well, I would say I’m still a kid at heart (a person who still feels like a child in their heart), so I really enjoy watching kids’ movies. Although they seem simple and innocent, there are often many life lessons packed into these films. Moreover, I’m really into drama and historical movies. When I watch these, I feel that I can more deeply understand human emotions and re-live historical moments, like the Vietnam-America War or World War II.

- Do you prefer watching films at home or at the cinema?
It depends. In fact, the tickets are quite expensive, therefore, I can’t afford to go to the museum all the time. Watching movies at home allows me to save a lot of money and have more freedom for myself. However, it’s great to see box-office hits with my boyfriend on special occasions such as Valentine or Women’s day because watching films on the big screen gives me a sense of romance and excitement.
- How often do you watch films?
I’m keen on watching American and British comedy series or movies at home whenever I have spare time. It depends on my working schedule, you know, because I’m quite occupied with my work. Watching drama series and short films is a great way for me to improve my English listening and speaking skills. Also, it helps me to relieve my stress to work more effectively.
- How often do you go to the cinema?
Unfortunately we don‟t have a cinema near us so we have to go into the nearest town to catch the latest movie … I usually avoid seeing popular box-office hits which I‟m not always keen on seeing … I
prefer low-budget films … sci-fi especially … and there‟s a great cinema I go to that has frequent showings of films like these …
- Do you prefer reading books or watching films?
I‟m not really a big reader … I find books quite heavy-going … so I much prefer to see a film …
perhaps it‟s the special effects or the soundtrack … I don‟t know … I just prefer a film …

- Do you like films?
“Yes, I do, I like it a lot. I regard it as my best way of of relaxing myself after a whole day‟s work and
study although it always kind of attracts me and ends up wasting my time with it.”
Absolutely! They are an excellent way to unwind (relax; free your mind). Moreover, my friends are reallt into films, so it’s a fun, relaxing way to spend time together. Afterwards, we discuss and debate the film that we have just watched. Apart from just relaxing and enjoying the film, I like to delve deeper (get to the deeper meaning) to discover the subliminal messages.
- What kinds of films do you like best?
“I guess I have to go for (chọn) romantic comedies. The main reason why I‟m a big fan of this type is that I really adore the happy endings of those movies. You know, I like movies that can make me laugh and even keep me smiling for the next few days. That‟s right, I‟m that crazy. Haha. Besides, I‟m also into some of the ones that keep me thinking all the way through too, “A Beautiful Mind” or “The Fifth Element”. And some classic old movies and American comedies are ok to me, too. Oh my god! I like everything.”
- How often do you watch films?
“Well, actually, I watch movies at home every day, 1 episode per day at least. I often choose a good series to follow, you know, sometime a romantic one, some are the latest or simply just something recommended by my friends. And if there is an interesting movie playing at the cinema, I‟ll go to see it with my friends sometimes, you know but just sometimes coz I don‟t have that much money if you know what I mean, the cinema tickets are very pricy to me.”

- Do you like watch films alone or with your friends?
“To be honest, I‟d rather watch films with my friends, you know, coz we can talk about it during or after
the movie, whether we enjoyed it or not, whether it‟s mind-numbing or interesting and we always end up having such a good time together. Of course, still, there‟s some time when I‟m not in the mood, I don‟t wanna torture (tra tấn) anyone but myself, if you know what I mean.
- Do you prefer watching films at the cinema or at home?
“Well, I think I would have to say it totally depends. You know, If it a big action film with lots of explosions, I would see it at the cinema you know, because, there, you get to see the movie on a big screen with a better sound system which will make the movie more impressive, you know. But others, I prefer watching at home because you can watch at your leisure and it‟s so convenient to pause or go back a few scenes if you find it attention grabbing which you do not have any control whatsoever in the cinema. Plus, there‟s nothing better than kicking back on your comfy old couch in front of the box.”

- Statistics show that visits to the cinema are up despite the availability of DVDs and online downloads. Why do you think this might be?
I think it‟s the whole experience that the cinema offers … going out to see a film when it goes on
general release … and seeing it on the big screen is more exciting than watching the film at home on TV especially if it‟s an action movie … and watching it with others makes it even more special …
- How often do you watch films?
Well, I am quite a busy bee (a busy person), but I manage to see about one or two films a week at home. After a long day of studying, I love snuggling up (getting comfortable with blankets) on the sofa and watching a film to unwind. I tend to do this on Friday and Sunday evenings with my friends.
- How often do you go to a cinema to watch a movie?
Not too often actually. As the prices in my country are quite high, I usually opt to (choose) watch a movie at home instead to save on costs. Actually, I think it’s kind of a waste of money to see a movie at a cinema when you can watch it from the comfort of your living room. I only go when a friend invites me, which is maybe 4 times a year.
- Do people in your country like to go to a cinema to watch a film?
I would say so. Since people like to go out with their families on the weekends, this is often an activity that they would choose. Moreover, teenagers enjoy this activity as a way to get out of the house. Furthermore, it’s often a popular date option for many people!

- What was the first film that you watched?
Hmm it’s hard to say the first, but I think it was the Lion King. I know it first came out in the early 90’s when I was a child. It was my absolute favorite- I used to watch it repeatedly until my parents were really tired of it! I even built “pride rock” out of rocks that I found when we would go to visit my relatives who have a garden.
- Do you like to watch movies alone or with your friends?
Both! On one hand, I find it extremely relaxing to chill out and fall asleep to a film by myself, but it’s also enjoyable to have company. So, all in all, I prefer films with friends, since they are also into film. Afterwards, we can discuss the meaning and carry on inside jokes (jokes among friends) from quotes from the film later on!
- Would you like to be in a movie?
Not one bit! As I have stage fright (fear of being on stage), I would never have the guts (never be brave enough to) to do it. Secondly, I feel awkward when I try to act and I have the memory of a goldfish (short memory) so I know I could never memorize my lines! All in all, acting is simply not my thing.
- Do you prefer foreign films or films made in your country?
Since my country doesn’t have a huge film industry, I’ve always been really into American films. Not to knock (to insult; discredit) other film industries, but American ones are incredibly entertaining and well-made; the evolution of film continues to amaze me. Moreover, I only watch films in English so it helps me to learn new slang and expressions.
