IELTS SPEAKING FORECAST CHỦ ĐỀ SPEAKING PART 3. PERSONAL GOALS AND WORK GOALS
1. Which one is more important, personal goals or work goals?
That’s a tough question. I feel like I’m comparing apples and oranges as I have never thought of weighing personal goals and work goals. Personal goals encompass relationships, health, self-growth, and well-being. Meanwhile, work goals focus on professional advancement, achievement, and career success. Hmmm, to be honest, if I had to pick one, I would prioritize my career right now because I’m quite a career-oriented person and I can’t imagine living without one. I guess once I achieve what I’m aiming for, this mindset might change.
- comparing apples and oranges (idiom): khó so sánh vì không tương đương
- encompass: bao gồm
- well-being: hạnh phúc.
- professional advancement,: sự thăng tiến nghề nghiệp,
- prioritize : ưu tiên sự nghiệp
- career-oriented person: định hướng sự nghiệp
- mindset : suy nghĩ, tư duy
2. Have your life goals changed since your childhood?
Absolutely. I reckon aspirations tend to change as individuals grow and experience different stages of life. During childhood, goals are often shaped by limited understanding and influenced by external factors. In contrast, adulthood brings various perspectives, adventures, and evolving priorities that can lead to a reevaluation. For example, back in the day, my friends and I all wished to be heroes who would save the world. Our goal for many years was to figure out our magical power and fight aliens just like in comic books. We’re all thinking more realistically now with clear objectives about our health, family life and career.
- Aspirations: ước vọng
- Influenced by external factors: ảnh hưởng bởi ngoại cảnh
- Reevaluation: sự nhìn nhận lại
- Back in the day (idiom) : hồi đó, ngày trước
- Aliens: người ngoài hành tinh
3. Does everyone set goals for themselves?
In my experience, establishing goals is not something everyone feels comfortable doing. There are some reasons for this, including a lack of belief and a fearful attitude. People are often not confident that, just by setting goals, they will be able to accomplish much more in their careers, their health, and their lives. So they’d rather just go with the flow. Another reason might be laziness. It’s just that people prefer watching TV all day to planning strategies to step out of their comfort zone.
- establishing goals: thiết lập mục tiêu
- a lack of belief and a fearful attitude: thiếu niềm tin và thái độ sợ hãi
- go with the flow (idom): để mọi thứ tự nhiên
- prefer Ving to Ving: thích làm gì hơn việc gì
4. What kinds or rewards are more important than other rewards at work?
Rewards value can be affected by various factors such as financial status and preferences. However, in my experience, intrinsic types of rewards are more significant. They can be the sense of purpose and competence or a feeling of pride a person achieves once completing a task. I suppose to instill these feelings in employees, managers have to talk to them regularly to determine what they desire. Also, creating a working environment with healthy competition and inspiration is key.
- financial status: tình trạng kinh tế
- preferences: sở thích
- intrinsic types of rewards: phần thưởng mang tính nội tại, tự cảm thấy
5. Do you think material rewards are more important than other rewards at work?
I don’t want to generalise because the importance of material rewards versus non-material benefits at work is subjective and depends on individual circumstances and values. While financial incentives can provide economic security, non-material rewards such as personal growth, work-life balance, and a sense of fulfilment can contribute to long-term job satisfaction and overall well-being.
- subjective: mang tính chủ quan
- Economic security: sự ổn định tài chính
- long-term job satisfaction: sự hài lòng về công việc lâu dài
- overall well-being: hạnh phúc
6. What makes people feel proud of themselves?
A feeling of honour and self-respect can be gained when people accomplish something meaningful, overcome challenges or make a positive impact on their living environment. In other words, pride often stems from achieving personal goals, acting in alignment with one’s values, receiving recognition for accomplishments, or contributing to the well-being of others or the community. Ultimately, feeling proud is subjective and can vary based on individual experiences and aspirations.
- A feeling of honour and self-respect: Cảm giác vinh dự và tự trọng
- make a positive impac: tạo ra tác động tích cực
- acting in alignment with one’s values: ndividual experiences and aspirations: kinh nghiệm và nguyện vọng của từng cá nhân.
